I knew I wanted to write a frontier story. What would draw someone to the West? Wheat! And Bringing in the Sheaves, a much-loved hymn from my childhood, became my song for the series.
The lyrics of that hymns were created by Knowles Shaw. This musician inherited a violin and a piece of advice from his father when the man died during Shaw’s childhood. “Prepare to meet your God.”
It took him years more before the significance of that—and
the Holy Spirit—took hold of his life. After he dedicated himself to preaching,
he became known as Indiana’s Singing Evangelist.
Knowles Shaw based this hymn on Psalm 126:5,6. They that
sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing
precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves
with him.
Sheaves. These are the wheat bundled together but not yet
harvested. It waits until it is brought in, and then the potential can be seen.
The seeds on the heavy heads of wheat are removed to be ground and made into
flour.
In the hymn, the speaker looks toward the potential. He sows
knowing that there will be sheaves. He has faith in God’s outcome.
