A Love Letter from George

I've been watching Ken Burns' excellent The American Revolution series and it has ignited my interest in the Revolutionary War period.

One thing I've noticed, is there isn't a lot of information about Martha Washington out there.

But this time of year, with romance on the brain, and President's Day right around the corner, I was delighted to happen across a love letter George wrote to her.

Because she spent so many years in the public, Martha destroyed must of her correspondence with George when he passed away in 1799. Only a few letters escaped the purge, two beneath her desk drawer.

One of those letters turned out to be a letter written from her beloved during the Revolutionary War. It is part of the public domain, so I am happily sharing it here.

Phila. June 23d 1775.

My dearest,

As I am within a few Minutes of leaving this City, I could not think of departing from it without dropping you a line; especially as I do not know whether it may be in my power to write again till I get to the Camp at Boston—I go fully trusting in that Providence, which has been more bountiful to me than I deserve, & in full confidence of a happy meeting with you sometime in the Fall—I have not time to add more, as I am surrounded with Company to take leave of me—I retain an unalterable affection for you, which neither time or distance can change, my best love to Jack & Nelly, & regard for the rest of the Family concludes me with the utmost truth & sincerity.

Your entire,

Go: Washington

Sigh.

Why don't we write love letters like this anymore? No wonder women swooned when their love wrote them a note if they used phrases like:

     unalterable affection for you,
which neither time or distance can change

When I think of George Washington, I don't think of a man given to flowery words of affection. I think of a battle-weary general who takes on the role as serving as our first president.

It's wonderful to see this very human and sweet side of him, where his wife and family where concerned.

Have you ever written or received a love letter?

Wishing you a Valentine's Day full of love, joy, and maybe a love letter or two.
